Plano was initially settled in 1840 as a farming community. Plano was incorporated on June 2, 1873, shortly after the Houston and Central Railroad opened. The railroad changed Plano from a farming community to a trading outpost. Downtown Plano began to thrive with the injection of commerce until a large fire consumed the city in 1896. As the city began to rebuild, many of the businesses placed deep roots that still remain in the area. Today, Historic Downtown Plano’s vibrant streets are alive with new artisan restaurants, retail stores and commercial spaces that draw in both residents and visitors.
